City of Joy Aid is a rescue, rehabilitation, and development action conducted in the slums of Calcutta and rural districts of Bengal to improve the living condition of the most underprivileged. Since 1981, Dominique Lapierre's royalties and lecture fees, as well as donations from his readers have supported this effort. This action is conducted locally and coordinated by independent Indian social welfare and community organizations.
